Lesson sixteen
Social Law: Thou Shall not Kill

7.      Killing one another or our children is strictly forbidden. Allah (S.W.A) decrees:

“Nor take life which Allah has made sacred except for a just cause. And if anyone is slain wrongfully, we have given his heir authority (to demand Qisas or to forgive): but let him not exceed bounds in the matter of taking life: for he is helped (by the law) (17:33).”

“Oh you who believe! The law of equality is prescribed to you in cases of murder. The free for the free, the slave for the slave, the woman for the woman. But if any remission is made by the brother of the slain, then grant any reasonable demand and compensate him with handsome gratitude. This is a concession and a mercy from your Lord. After this, whoever exceeds the limits shall be in grave penalty (2:178)”.

“In the law of equality, (there is) saving of (life to you); oh you men of understanding: that you may restrain yourselves (2:179)”

Kill not your children for fear of want: We shall provide sustenance for them as well as for you. Verily, the killing of them is a great sin (17:31).

Say: “come, I will rehearse what Allah (S.W.A) has (really) prohibited you from”: join not anything as equal with Him; be good to your parents; kill not your children on a plea of want - we provide sustenance for you and for them; come not nigh to shameful deeds - whether open or secret; take not life, which Allah (S.W.A) has made sacred, except by way of justice and law. Thus does He command you, that you may learn wisdom (6:151).

One hadith says that killing one person is like killing the whole world. And likewise to save a person is like saving the whole world. Suicide because of personal problems is a sin of killing. Those who commit suicide are murderers. They take the life of an individual – themselves. Therefore, suicide under duress of pain or life’s pressures is forbidden. After all, pain is a test and a lesson for those who experience it and those who witness it. The prophet,Muhammad (S.A.W), said that some cases of ailments are a way of purification for the one afflicted, for example, fever.

Considering the gravity of killing, we should not play games that involve senseless killing. For now, they are just games, but what we do not know is that these games are slowly making us getting used and comfortable with destroying life. These games destroy our reverence to life. There are many cases in the world today where young children have killed one another or their parents. I strongly feel that this is due to the movies we watch and the games we play that make killing a commonplace event. Let us not fall into this trap. We should not watch or play games where human beings are tortured and mercilessly killed. If it is a movie and we must be there, at least, we must turn away our heads when the sanctity of life is being violated. We must never learn to derive pleasure from evil. If it is a war game where killing and dying are inevitable, at least, we must always play the side defending truth and justice. Aggression and persecution is the work of Shaitan. It is wrong to play on the side of the evil one in any game. Play your games, but always remember to respect life.
